O.R. Given to Former Redondo Beach police officer charged with embezzlement from officers association, From Bail Bondsman in Redondo Beach

A former Redondo Beach police officer has been charged with embezzling more than $70,000 from the local police officers association he oversaw.

Gene Tomatani, 40 was charged with grand theft by embezzlement with an allegation that the defendant took more than $65,000, said prosecutor Paul Nuñez of the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

The defendant, who appeared in court today for an arraignment hearing that was postponed until Jan. 8, remains free on his own recognizance. According to prosecutors, Tomatani has paid $12,000 in restitution.

While working as either president or treasurer for the Redondo Beach Police Officers' Assn., Tomatani allegedly embezzled a total of $ 72,388.56 from May 2004 to May 2008. He also is accused of embezzling $3,000 from the city of Redondo Beach.

He was relieved of duty in November of last year after the money was discovered missing. In October this year, Tomatani submitted his resignation while administrative hearings were pending, prosecutors said.

If convicted, Tomatani faces as many as four years in state prison.

At this time Tomatani is still released from custody on an O.R., we will update the story as it changes as relating to bail.
